The Amazon basin is a place of extensive exploitation, deforestation, and urbanization, all of which continue to affect and transform the livelihoods and lifestyles of many human and nonhuman communities that depend on its ecosystem. The poet and teacher Juan Carlos Galeano’s two documentary films El Río (The River, 2018) and The Trees Have a Mother (2008) capture the stories, languages, and beliefs of different people living around the city of Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon. Fishermen, shamans, and other characters tell stories about how they rely on the river and the forest not only for their material sustenance, which is increasingly at risk, but also for their sense of social and cultural belonging.
